    Investment Readiness and Other Funding Options
     
    Technology-backed new ventures will have a number of funding options dependent on where they are in their funding cycle and what their sector focus is. The schematic diagram below clearly illustrates where the Mercia Technology Seed Fund is focussed. It will invest at the seed stage, and working with the founding management, look to build out management and attract in further third party investment. The Mercia Technology Seed Fund is an active hands on investor.

    Pre-Mercia Technology Seed Fund investment, there exist a number of grant funding options provided by other institutions:

    • Grants for R&D (regional basis, available through Advantage West Midlands and range from £2,500 to £500,000 to support technologically innovative research and development projects in small and medium sized enterprises). For more information please go to www.westmidlandsfinance.com
    • Spinner (Grants toward patenting, market research, business plans, prototyping and interim management for university spin outs). For more information go to www.spinner.org.uk
    • Technology Transfer Fund (Grants of up to £25k for new and potential start-ups and existing Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), working in the Advanced Materials and Medical Technologies fields, for activities such as business planning, protection of intellectual property, market research and final prototyping).     • Carbon Trust (The Carbon Trust’s Applied Research Programme is open to UK businesses and research institutions and aims to support the development and commercialisation of technology with the potential to reduce UK carbon dioxide emissions.
